Living as a normal person by day, by nightfall the head detaches from the body into quite the frightful sight. Nak was beautiful, pregnant and truly in love. All was well, until her husband was conscripted to fight in the war. Whilst he was away, Mae and the baby both passed away in childbirth. The husband realises once he sees Nak stretch her arm out to pick something up, and he flees.

The first ever ghost story was probably written by a Roman lawyer and author called Pliny the Younger. He wrote about the ghost of an old man in chains that was haunting a particular house.

When filmmakers from the Far East decide to get mysterious, they do not fool around. Hollywood does vampires reasonably well perhaps because it has so many of them. The Asian ghost story has a distinguished lineage: serious filmmakers like Kenji Mizoguchi, Masaki Kobayashi and Stanley Kwan have worked in the genre without shame and without a hint of condescension to the shades and specters and odd bits of ectoplasm that populate it. And the films of Mr. Nakata and the Pangs have absorbed some of that mournful dignity; it's as if the filmmakers were discharging a solemn duty, honoring an obligation to the spirits they invoke.
Taiwan is celebrating the Ghost Festival on Friday, August 28 th , though in some countries the date is different. Traditionally, locals believed that ghosts haunt the island of Taiwan for the entire seventh lunar month, when the mid-summer Ghost Festival is held. The month is known as the Ghost Month. The first day of the month is marked by opening the gate of a temple, symbolizing the gates of hell. On the twelfth day, lamps on the main altar are lit.
